Lake Hawea Home – A Minimal and Functional Design for Modern Living

At Minimal Design, we love creating spaces that feel right at home in the stunning landscapes of the Southern Lakes region. One of our latest architectural projects, designed for our long-time friends Michelle and Brodan, reflects exactly that — simplicity, functionality, and connection to nature.

Located in beautiful Lake Hawea, just a short drive from Wanaka, this home was shaped by its surroundings. With Brodan being a skilled builder, he took the challenge of constructing the house himself, making this a very personal and rewarding project for all of us.

Designing with Purpose and Simplicity

From the beginning, the focus was on a clean and efficient layout that celebrates the natural setting. The floor plan was oriented to capture solar gain and maximise the stunning views of Lake Hawea and the surrounding mountains. Large windows and simple forms allow light and landscape to flood the interior while keeping the structure minimal and cost-effective.

The house features a thoughtful combination of natural materials and smart interior touches — balancing warmth and practicality with a fresh, modern outlook.
